Description
No. 9 Seymour Walk is a post World War II construction: it is situated in ‘Little Chelsea’, to the north of the Fulham Road and within the Boltons Conservation Area. It is not statutorily listed.
The project involved the excavation of a new basement. Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd London was engaged to carry out recording of a historic wall exposed during the excavations of a basement extension.
The earliest part of Seymour Walk dates from the last years of the 18th century before which it was located within the walled enclosure of a substantial house.
The historic brickwork was encountered during the reduction of the existing ground floor level to create the basement. It was formed of mainly red bricks laid in Old English Bond. This bonding pattern was commonly used from 1450-1650, although it continued to be used until end of 17th century and later. The bricks were quite shallow in depth, and often of poor quality and irregularity, indicative of rapid production, which probably dates the wall to the late 17th century but before the imposition of the brick tax of 1784.
The characteristics of the brickwork, their dimension and use of fair and poor-quality bricks point towards a date at the 17th century and almost certainly relates to a 17th century mansion originally on the site, although alternatively it may relate to its boundary wall or an associated building.
The completion of the recording work facilitated the discharge of the planning application and enabled the construction and fitting out of the new basement. No outreach or publication was required.
