Description
PCA Warwick was commissioned to undertake archaeological monitoring and recording where a single storey side extension was to be located to improve access to the church. The fieldwork was preceded by a Written Scheme of Investigation submitted to, and approved by, the Local Planning Authority.
The access point was to be through a previously blocked doorway and so would not affect the historic fabric of the church. Archaeological monitoring was required to investigate the potential for subsurface archaeological remains due to the proximity of graves in that location. Within the foundation trench for the extension, the western end of a single undated grave cut was noted and was preserved in situ. Elsewhere within the foundation trench two further pits were recorded which had been dug to rebury disarticulated bones (charnel) from previously disturbed graves in the post-medieval period. Two further cuts were identified during the excavation of a much shallower service trench and, whilst their dimensions and orientation were suggestive of graves, no articulated human remains were seen at the depths necessary for the services. Elsewhere the archaeological monitoring identified occasional disarticulated remains, which were reburied locally to the point of recovery in every case, and always kept from public view. A short report has been produced to satisfy planning conditions.
