Description
Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd London was commissioned to undertake an archaeological evaluation and historic building recording at Bushey Hall Golf Club, in order to satisfy a planning condition attached to planning permission granted for the redevelopment of the site and improvements to the golf course. The existing clubhouse was to be demolished and replaced by a residential block comprising 31 units.
Bushey Hall Golf Club lies within a former parkland landscape associated with Bushey Hall, built in 1865, which was subsequently converted into a hotel in 1882. The century house was built near to the original manor of Bushey Hall, dating back to 1428 and is situated between Watford and Bushey, two settlements of 11th century or earlier origin.
The historic building recording was undertaken on the former clubhouse and showed that it had a complex development. The central gabled part of the clubhouse is thought to have formed this pavilion and by 1897 it had been extended to the west. This building had timberwork walls with a veranda, a balcony above and an external staircase. In 1902, a new two storey clubhouse was built.
The archaeological evaluation comprised 19 trenches which were distributed across the site in order to provide a representative sample of the development area. The golf course was shut temporarily for the works, with the clubhouse also out of action while the work took place.
No archaeological finds or features pre-dating the late 19th/early 20th century were located. The building recording and evaluation were reported in separate reports that informed the local planning authority in being able to make the decision that no further mitigation measures were required as part of the archaeological planning condition.
