Description
PCA Norwich conducted an archaeological trial trench evaluation at Childerley Farm in advance of the development of a renewable energy-led generating station and related infrastructure. The trial trench evaluation comprised 76 trenches, each measuring 50m x 1.8m, positioned across the site to create a representative sample of potential archaeological deposits identified during an earlier geophysical survey.
The proposed development area lies near numerous designated heritage assets: Overhaul Moated Site is located c.1km to the west, as well as Childerley Hall, a 16th Century II* listed park and garden  located immediately south of the site. Furthermore, Childerley Hall Chapel is in this area alongside two listed Victorian farm complexes
The findings of the archaeological trial trenching closely reflected the findings of the geophysical survey. The trenching confirmed areas of archaeological activity; potential Bronze and Iron Age dated remains had previously been recorded within the proposed development site, with the geophysical survey reflecting two possible Bronze Age Barrows being present. These barrows had enclosing ditches, as well as magnetic centres suggestive of in-situ burning. In addition, there was a suspected Bronze Age dated circular ditch in the southwestern corner of the development site. Fieldwalking surveys in the area yielded worked flints that were undated but believed to be from the Bronze Age.
The remaining areas of significance were consolidated into seven principal locations, which revealed the remains of animal enclosures and small farmsteads dating from the late Iron Age to the Middle Roman period.
The trial trenching has demonstrated the survival of significant remains, demonstrating settlement expansion through the Iron Age and Roman periods. The trial trenching has determined the presence of significant archaeological remains and need for further excavations prior to any development. Following further excavation reporting will be undertaken to satisfy planning conditions and the results will be published in an appropriate local or regional archaeological journal.
