Description
An evaluation, or ‘trial trenching’, programme was commissioned and undertaken in conjunction with planning agreements, in advance of landscaping works at the site. This was located at the south-east end of the main runway at Dunsfold and situated in the environs of a Grade II listed Royal Observer Corp (ROC) monitoring post. Additionally, crop marks and find spots in the surrounding area evidenced a likelihood of prehistoric activity within the scope of the site. The potential for archaeological remains was also noted for the Roman and Modern periods. The latter concerns the development of the aerodrome itself during the Second World War.
Previous archaeological works had revealed two enclosure ditches, one of which was assigned a Roman date. Cremation burials, roundhouses and post-medieval evidence were also excavated. As a result, the archaeological potential of the aerodrome works was undeniable.
The work comprised the excavation and investigation of a combined total of 54 trenches but no significant archaeological remains were revealed.
The programme of works was concluded, and the results were reported on allowing the relevant planning conditions to be discharged.
